« Thread started on: Aug 8th, 2008, 03:40am »

The park at Verao sat comfortably in midst of the city, the numerous skeletal white birch trees reaching up like plants born from the little snow that could be seen in the distant landscape. Shoots were on their way, and not long in the future, the birch and ash trees all around the park would produce the kind of mixed canopy that would surely be the delight of every picnic. The water at the lake had woken to Spring and lacked the ice necessary for skating and the warmth for swimming, yet that did not seem to stop the occasional sketch-artist or person looking for a bit of calm in their lunch-break from enjoying being near the clear waters.

Leontine drew a cheap pocket-watch, inlaid with a pop-symbol on its cover, from her new-but-beaten leather jacket, and checked the time. It would be about lunchtime at Jardin Academy; she did not want to move into her dormitory room in the midst of that commotion. With a cold hand, she put the watch back in her pocket and brought the gas station "deli" sandwich up for another bite. She brought her head against the ash tree to her back in closed-eye delight of the just-expired, stale flavor of the food. It was the flavor of being out of reach of the estate chef and his redundant selection of coq au vin and bouillabaisse, of kugelhupf and other "dignified" choices.

With slow, steady focus, Leontine scanned the dry-but-soft grass in front of her, trying to consider each blade if only for an instant, then the small hill several meters past the grass, and then lastly at the polished chrome grille of another of her rebellious purchases that rested at the parking area at the top of the hill -- only then did she let a blink go over her jade-green eyes. When an inkling of excitement brought a grin to her face, she had to remind herself to be patient as not much of the sandwich remained. A cold breeze whipped around the tree and she sampled the notes and aromas carried within it.

Angel walked around the park looking for something to do, 'hm... snow... blah' she thought as she drank from her jug. 'Seriously this is depressing...' Angel continued to walk when she happened upon a girl sitting alone. 'This should be fun.' Angel thought with a grin as she tried to sneak up on the girl.

Angel's grin turned into a mischievous smile that exposed to long canines, she jumped in front of the girl bearing her fangs and hissed.

Only a quick step or two got to Leontine's hearing before the girl halted in front of her and began to hiss with a very realistic pair of elongated canines. Lee's back tightened against the ash and her mild grin faded a bit but abruptly increased. She ignored most of the other youth's features once she noticed the teeth.

"Did you ever see a pair of teeths like these," she said with playful menace; "Is not the time peculiar for a prosthetic pair, however?"

Angel relaxed her stance and ran her tongue through one of her fangs "Oh they're very, very, very real..." Angel chuckled, giving the girl a crooked smile taking in the girl's features. 'Nice.' Angel thought approvingly.

Angel confidently walked towards the girl, stopped an inch of the girl's face and smiled again showing her fangs. "Nice teeth..." Angel whispered.

Though still bearing her self-assured grin, she looked to the side of the person in front her to note the motion of an insect flying off a blade of grass. Nice teeth?

"Thanks, I suppose," Leontine replied, her eyes, narrowed and challenging, focused into those of the face only a scarce measure away. She drew another vacuum-packed sandwich from the insulated pouch at her side and raised it at the height of the conversation. "Want a sandwich -- If you have time before class, that is," she asked, not unfriendily.

Angel pulled back and shrugged "Sorry I have a thing for teeth, and hands ans feet.. etc." Angel said with an airy laugh. "Nope, no sandwich for me thanks."

Angel sat beside the girl and took swig from her jug, she lit a cigarette before she spoke, "So that's how you react... to something trying to scare you, you grin and that's it? And I'm made the effort of jumping outta nowhere, hissing, bearin' my teeth and boom! I get a bleedin' grin..." Angel sighed and offered the girl the jug "You want a drink?" She asked with a sheepish smile...

"Oh, no thanks, but thanks," Leontine replied kind and lightly. She put the sandwich back in the bag and pressed close its velcro seal. She reached out with both hands in front of her in a post-lunch stretch. It was still too soon to get in her car and head for the academy, not that she minded all too much. The girl to her right was interesting company, after all. Leontine rested her eyes shut and her back to the tree.

"Do you often ambush people when you meet them," she asked warmly. "Not to say it isn't neat -- it's a cool way to greet -- but I wonder if this a some sort of initiation treat sent from the academy?"

"No mostly I scare them, prank them, ya know... I'm Angel, you are?" Angel looked at the girl taking a long drag and then taking a drink from the jug.

A little bit of the liquid left a red line from the corner of her mouth down to her chin, Angel wiped it away and grinned at the girl. "I'm a messy drinker... And no I'm not the school's welcoming committee I'm just a head case on a head trip..." Angel laughed.

"Lee Stark," she said when Angel had finished laughing, "at your service." A sense of sleep seemed to appear almost instantly and she sat up, shaking it off.

Desi wasn't entirely sure what she was doing here, in the city of Verao, when she couldn't even find her way around the Jardin campus yet. Part of it was that she couldn't find her roommate. Part of it was because sitting all alone in her room had given her time to think about things she shouldn't. Part of it was that she'd gotten sick of acting passive and helpless and getting lost on the campus wasn't helping, but, she thought, mostly it was just that, no matter where she went on campus the pace would have a purpose. And she, she just needed to find a place where she could just exist, without expectations.

The brunette itched at a bugbite on her ankle with the heel of her foot and stared broodingly across to the other side of the frigid spring lake. She had been suprised, leaving the heated buildings, to find a remnant of the crisp icy weather of the winter they had just left behind. The zip-up hoodie she was wearing over her school uniform was warm and felted, and, with the hood down, the wind brought a numb, rosy tinge to her nose and cheeks and ears. Her chin-length hair felt charged with static from the cold.

She grabbed a handful of the hoodie and brought it up to her face, inhaling the imagined scent of ceadar wood and body heat she always told herself would be there. In reality, the smell of the previous owner of the sweatshirt had long faded into 'Spring Fresh!' lavender and lemongrass, her mother's detergent of choice, but, when she felt lonely like this, she liked to pretend Noel's scent was there to comfort her.

In practice, it was rather counter-productive. She closed her eyes and sighed as the morose feeling welled up in her a bit higher.

"Crap," she mumbled. Maybe coming to the park had been a bad idea. She knelt down and picked up a small, round stone. She observed it for a moment. It was quite pretty, actually. A lapis blue, with little black lines that spidered through it like veins, little fragile spasms of ink on a dark sky. It was almost perfectly oval, the perfect size to drill a hole through, if one planned to wear it as a necklace.

She whipped it as hard as she could into the center of the lake. It landed with a gutteral plunk in the water.

Leontine rose up from her seat at the ash tree; it wouldn't do to be sleepy, to miss something. She brushed grass off the faded black cotton of her broomstick skirt, and checked the watch tucked into her jacket; it still was too early to go. It wouldn't do to be impatient, to miss something. Anything could be consequential.

A breath of the cold breeze seemed to soothe her sense of uneasiness. It picked up a bit, further mussing her hair, moving the slimmer trees and grass into a short dance with it, and Leontine nodded with affirmation. The water still held a reflection of nearby things: the person in red and black plaid with a book reading leisurely on a bench, a statue of some unfamiliar person clothed at their shoulders in the whites of avian spite, a girl in a hoodie and uniform throwing a stone into the lake. Leontine regarded the scenery, watching ripples spread from where the stone struck the placid waters.

Desi sighed and turned away from the water's edge with her internal discomfort only slightly assuaged. The air was still a bit frigid. She tugged down the skirt on her uniform to cover more of her legs.

Really, it was a frighteningly short skirt for a school of girls meant to be brought up as proper ladies. At least Jardin didn't require anything really bad, like Finishing Classes, or Needlepoint. She hoped.

The brunette looked up and suddenly found her eyes locked with those of a girl in a beat-up (but stylishly so, which probably meant she'd bought it like that) leather jacket. Desi blinked. Nervously she smiled, tugging her skirt down another half-inch. "Er, hello. Can I help you with something?"

It had been an accident, but she did not focus on that. Near-instantly, she focused on the other girl's eyes but remembered that it was not considered polite to stare at people, regardless of upbringing. It was just too tempting at times to look; Leontine felt that eyes could say anything and everything, every color and contour saying something.

"Sorry," she began with a rather goofy slant in her usual half-smile, looking out to the water, "I was just keeping my eye on the throw, the sight of the ripples in the water. Nothing's moved that water all day, I guess."

Desi quirked her head to the side, eyes sparkling with humorous curiosity. "Really? All day? Well... that's... boring." She laughed then, suddenly, and was suprised that the dark knot in her chest seemed to shatter and twinkle off into the air with the simple reaction.

She smiled complacently and pocketed her hands in the warm belly of her jacket. "I can't imagine it'd be fun watching something that never changes. I'm Desi, Desi Healy. It's nice to meet you."

Stepping closer to the girl, Desi realized she was quite a bit taller and quite a bit thinner than the bulky leather jacket had made her seem at first. In fact, the word that sprung to mind most readily was... 'willowy'. Williowy, winnowy, minnow-y... actually, that described her nicely, too. Despite her pale complexion and dark assets, not to mention her incredibly slim frame, the girl didn't seem brittle and breakable at all. She moved gracefully, like the silver minnows that had danced and swirled in the lake shallows.

Desi herself had always been more of the 'vibrant, curvy types', the ones with nice busts and strong hips, but that are still too soft to make it look especially sexy. The fact that she ran around life at 65 miles-per-hour most of the time really didn't help her gain any 'graceful' rep points.

She smiled a bit more self-conciously at the girl in front of her. She didn't look that much older than Desi, actually, so she was probably a Junior or a Senior- or whatever they called the grades at Jardin. "I'm a student at the Academy here," she continued, "I actually just came out here for a change of pace. I wasn't really intending to mess with anybody's ripple-less-ness."

"Not a problem," Leontine began, smiling wide, "It'd be a test of patience to witness constant ripple-less-ness without someone to mess it up now and then, yes, that's best." She snickered a bit, nervously. She turned her look to Desi, and decided that instant that she was dealing with a person worth knowing -- there was a warmth, a glint, in those eyes.

"Lee Stark," she said, favoring the casual interpretation of her own name over the real one. "Happy to meet ya', Desi. I'm actually, a, um, new student, a transfer. I'm supposed to be there at the Academy, but I thought I'd take my time a bit," she said with a sheepish grin.
